CHARACTER
Character Name: Ryou Bakura
Character Age: 17 (ish)
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh (Duel Monsters)
Canon Point: Just a short time past the final chapter of Millennium World/The Memory World Arc.

History: Wiki links! I've provided several because like. The setup for the Yu-Gi-Oh Wiki has separate links for anime and manga. I typically adhere to manga for the most part

Personality: Ryou Bakura is, by all accounts, a character who tends to blend in a bit. When first introduced, Ryou is taciturn and generally keeps to himself--out of fear for what prolonged contact with him could cause. It was a fair fear to have, since at that time, his Millennium Ring's evil spirit, Yami Bakura, was stealing the souls of his friends through Shadow Games and calling it "payment" for being housed in Ryou's body. Ryou eventually breaks free of this control to effectively throw the dark spirit's Shadow Game, even sacrificing his soul to ruin "Bakura's" plans. By the time the Monster World arc ends, its clear that although Ryou is quiet and reserved, once he makes friends he cares about and knows the danger they're in, he'll sacrifice what he must in order to preserve those connections. He cares about the people who treat him kindly, and will fight as best as he can, even if it's just to fumble a roll or miscalculate the calculations of damage against the heroes of the game as he did during the one and only game of Monster World we see in all the series.

The first Yu-Gi-Oh manga predating the Duelist series introduces Ryou as a quiet boy who often transfers from school to school and lives alone. However, after becoming friends with Yugi, Jonouchi, Honda, and Anzu, he begins to come out of that self-created shell and often encourages them from the sidelines of major card game duels. Being knowledgeable on Duel Monsters, Ryou is also able to discuss critical moves that duelists have taken; something fairly helpful when considering the complications of the card game.

Unfortunately...that doesn't make him forgettable. Yami Bakura makes him very unforgettable, in all the worst ways. The evil spirit has controlled Ryou very often, causing pain and suffering for so many of the characters he encountered and even claiming a few lives and injuring his host for self-gain. It's not easy to divorce oneself from that kind of image, but Ryou does try...

Since Ryou is often relegated to cheer squad or otherwise left to the wayside by his darker side possessing him, there's some things that must be inferred by his actions. For example, Ryou's deck and his habit of writing letters to his dead sister Amane are very clear indications that he has inclinations towards the supernatural and knowledge surrounding it. As a matter of fact, part of the reason he followed Yugi and Jonouchi to the Duelist Kingdom was to learn more about the Millennium Items; his Ring, Yugi's Puzzle, and even the Millennium Eye all held interest to him. In pursuit of this knowledge, he was even persuaded by Yami Bakura to put the Ring back on and let spirit control his actions and solve puzzles, all as long as he was "helping". Call it pride, or call it gullibility. Ryou has always been a trusting sort. He trusts Yugi, had no deep quarrel with Kaiba seeing as he had showed up long after Death-T, and consistently keeps the Millennium Ring.

Of course, keeping the Ring as close as he does could have provided just enough proximity for the spirit inside to influence him. Ryou has always shown himself to be easily influenced, either by the actions of others, or by supernatural beings. During Battle City, he was even controlled simultaneously by his dark side and Malik Ishtar, the former whom had used his body to kill Bandit Keith's former henchmen and the latter of which had used his Millennium Rod to suppress the pain of Ryou's grievous arm injury--an injury caused to draw the villains ever closer to the protagonist, Yugi.

Despite it all, Ryou really does have strength of conviction, if not strength of will or body. He'll keep on doing what he thinks is right, and he'll stay friends with Yugi.

Due to the canon point I've chosen which is centered between the original ending of Yu-Gi-Oh and the recent film Dark Side of Dimensions, it's also important to note that Ryou's brush with possession has left negative implications; he has a difficult time forgiving himself if he feels that he is at fault for anything, and he's particularly--unintentionally--standoffish with people. This doesn't mean he's unkind; it's difficult for Ryou to actually be unkind. This presents more in a way that...he has problems trusting new acquaintances.

Furthermore, he doesn't believe himself trustworthy, and after everything that's happened, he can't stand the thought of ulterior or negative motives being ascribed to him. He'll either become angered (as he did when Bobasa forbade him to enter Pharaoh Atem's memory world) that he's deemed unworthy, agree with the sentiment and pull away, become even more aloof in an attempt to distance himself from meaningful relationships he could harm...or he will express sorrow that he'd done something awful again, especially under his own control. The latter has manifested in a strong psychological reaction to the thought of stealing anything, or the implication that he has considered thievery.

Stealing the Ring back during the Battle City Tournament's end was enough.

He learned his lesson, and it's hard for him to consider such a heinous act again. He is Ryou Bakura and no one else. He won't take the mantle that was all but placed on him by the series, and by most people who interacted with the dark spirit of the Millennium Ring.

So to sum this all up, Bakura's a sweet guy who cares about his friends and will go out of his way to help them and protect them, even from himself. He's made mistakes, and is bound to continue making them, especially given the fact that he has such a hard time dealing with what he'd been made to do by an evil spirit. Also he likes games. Who doesn't in this series??

Inventory:
- His standard Duel Monsters deck from Battle City ("Occult Deck")
- The clothes on his back (a blue undershirt with long sleeves over which is a blue and white striped shirt, tan jeans and blue/purple sneakers with white soles.)

Abilities: Ryou is perfectly ordinary, actually! Other than...you know, probably being a reincarnation of some Ancient Egyptian someone or other, like half the main characters in Yu-Gi-Oh are.

As a smidge of my own headcanon, I do usually posit that he's particularly vulnerable to dark arts and magic, since he has been successfully controlled by two Millennium Item wielders (Yami Bakura and Malik Ishtar). Basically, he's just more susceptible to possession.

As far as normal thngs he can do, Ryou is good with his hands when it comes to crafting. It is implied that he created all of the Monster World player figures he keeps in his house, he's created a commemorative diorama for the conclusion of his introductory arc, and it is stated that he created the enormous replica of Ancient Egypt upon which the Millennium World arc was played out.

It is also implied that he is fairly proficient at Duel Monsters, and in the manga, he states that his interest in the dark and grotesque influenced his "Occult Deck" build.

Also headcanon of mine is that Ryou is at least somewhat fluent in English. Not that it matters, with how things work in games, but just a small note.

Flaws: Ryou has plenty of flaws despite being the least offensive of Yugi's group of friends on his own.

All of Yami Bakura's sins can be lain bare at his feet, considering that throughout all of Yu-Gi-Oh's first series, he goes out of his way to keep the Millennium Ring near him, and/or retrieve it by any means. Including stealing it back, as he did following the Battle City finals. This could be excused when considering how manipulative the Ring spirit can be, but not for every instance.

As far as a chaotic element, although Ryou is rather unassuming and a generally kindhearted boy, he does have leanings of interest towards the occult and finds things that others would deem frightening to be "interesting."

In addition, Ryou is overly trusting. He'll trust someone to his grave, even when they mean him harm. This is shown many times, when he takes advice from the evil entity housed in his Ring and allows him control for things like solving a difficult puzzle put forth by the enemy.
