Character Name: Ryou Bakura
Age: 18
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh (Manga)
Canon Point: Post Manga + Dark Side of Dimensions
Character Information: Wiki
Personality: Ryou can be summed up pretty neatly as a gentle soul who would do anything for his friends, even at his expense...though he has been known to make grievous mistakes that put them in danger. Kind of a mess, if you think about it.
He's a somewhat guarded individual, hiding the reasons for his reticent behavior from people who try and reach out to him at first. In most situations, all that can be placed on the shoulders of the spirit of the Millennium Ring (henceforth to also be referred to as Yami Bakura for my sanity). This spirit spent the majority of the series dominating Ryou's body to achieve his own ends, and although Ryou wasn't always sure what was going on, he still pulled himself back. For example, once his friends started going into comas after participating in Monster World campaigns with him, he began to separate himself from others, fearing that he was in some way the cause of this. As it turns out, he was pretty much correct.
Ryou becomes more comfortable with friendship as the series progresses, though that can be attributed to the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle (or Yami Yugi for brevity's sake) freeing him from Yami Bakura's control. He happily hangs around with Yugi and becomes a closer member of his friend group, even traveling with Yugi and Jonouchi through different card tournaments. He consistently explains the workings of duels for the generally uninitiated Honda and Anzu, and supports them both from the sidelines. Of course he'd want to hold tight to those friends, given that he had lost many of his prior social ties because of Yami Bakura. As it happens, that situation revealed something about Ryou.
Although he appears to have a weak will that allows Yami Bakura to control him easily, he can and will fight back to help those he deems friends, up to and including the sacrifice of his own soul. This goes back to him being a gentle guy; although he tries to keep to himself at first, he ultimately values people who treat him like a regular person--not a cute boy, not a weird kid. His urges to do the right thing can thwart the spirit possessing him, but...unfortunately, Ryou's kind personality does get him in trouble. Specifically, he's made very foolish decisions with regard to wearing the Millennium Ring which have led to putting his friends in danger from Yami Bakura.
To put it in simple terms, Ryou has placed far too much trust in the spirit more than once. His poor decision-making caused him to follow the guidance of the Ring more than once, even putting it on when he knows he can be possessed easily through those means just because he thinks it might help. Really. This shows that though Ryou initially kept more to himself, he does have a trusting streak that doesn't just extend to his friends.
On the subject of Ryou's poor decisions...the guy has a selfish streak at times, especially when it comes to finding out about the Millennium Items. He's put his friends in danger before by keeping the Millennium Ring and therefore its nasty spirit in close proximity to himself. That leaves him open to influence, but honestly? Yami Bakura only needed to push certain ways, since Ryou's desperation for knowledge blinds him to the truth of that which is right in front of him--like being manipulated to collect Millennium Items for the spirit. Despite having nothing but the best intentions, this can't be written off. He's the one who discretely carries the Ring. He's the one who keeps putting it on against advisement.Stop that. You stop that right now, dude.
For his part, however...Ryou's grown. By DSOD's timeline he has fully detached himself from any wish to be reminded of the Millennium Items, especially the event that led up to him receiving the Ring, and he expresses unfiltered guilt at what he's done, even crying when faced with Diva's wrath at him, for simply being the host to the murderer of Shadi.
Even before DSOD however, Ryou did have another habit that permeates a lot of his conversations and commentary. Maybe it ties in with guilt, maybe it has to do with the way he is as a person, but Ryou is a demonstrably negative person at times. Although he's kind and supportive, and only wants the best for his friends...he has a habit of pointing out strategical flaws and assuming that Jonouchi, for example, has lost any chance to win a duel. Perhaps this is just a more realistic mindset, seeing as most characters pull wins out of thin air at times, but generally his faith is easily shaken...even if quickly reinstated by a positive outcome.
A final thing that is important to who Ryou is as a person is his interests in games and the occult. To get right down to it...although the spirit of the Millennium Ring took advantage of his tabletop RPG supplies and dioramas, the one who fabricated it all was Ryou to begin with (down to crafting the individual figurines), and he was fond of taking the "Dark Master" role which meant he controlled the villain of the board to create adversity for player characters. He might be a generally unassuming guy, but between this and his Duel Monsters deck which was stuffed full of the undead, malevolent spirits, and a freaking Ouija Board meant to insta-win the game...it's clear where his interests lie. This proclivity for the strange might also explain why he writes letters to his deceased sister from time to time.
